The Great Wine Capitals 2021 Best of Wine Tourism Awards are set to celebrate the resilience of the South Australian wine industry during one of the most challenging years in recent times.

The awards have been launched today, Friday 31 July, with wineries encouraged to apply using a simpler process.

Primary Industries and Regions Executive Director (Agriculture, Food and Wine) Jo Collins said it was remarkable seeing some innovative thinking by wineries to keep engaging with their customers during COVID-19.

"We know it's been a challenging time for the wine industry during COVID-19, so the program has been adjusted so it's easier to apply and participate in this year's awards," said Ms Collins.

"We are also looking to recognise the resilience of the wine industry during this time."

Brian Smedley, Chief Executive of the South Australian Wine Industry Association, said some wineries have shown great ingenuity.

"Despite the difficult circumstances with COVID-19, they have displayed great diversification by setting up virtual tastings, tours and interactive online experiences," he said.

Ms Collins noted that overall the awards celebrate the best wine tourism experiences on offer.

"These awards place each winner into the spotlight both locally and globally, demonstrating the value of being part of the Great Wine Capitals Global Network," she said.

"South Australia is home to 680 wineries and 340 cellar doors. Our wine industry is a key contributor to our economy and a drawcard to regional South Australia, in 2018–19, generating $2.3 billion in revenue."

The seven categories are:

  • Accommodation
  • Architecture and Landscape
  • Art and Culture
  • Innovative Wine Tourism Experience (this category will celebrate the demonstration of resilience by use of innovation following COVID-19)
  • Wine Tourism Restaurant
  • Sustainable Wine Tourism Practices
  • Wine Tourism Services.

The local winners will be announced in late September 2020, while the international award winner – selected by consumer choice – will be announced at the Great Wine Capitals AGM later in the year.

Adelaide, South Australia, is part of the prestigious Great Wine Capitals Global Network, a group of international cities whose wine regions are recognised as significant economic and cultural assets.

Membership acknowledges excellence in grape and wine production, a commitment to research and development, education and wine tourism services, and the way in which the wine industry is inextricably linked to the city's character, success and vision.
