Rare South Australian wine sells for over $50,000

21 July, 2017

A bottle of 1951 Penfolds Grange Hermitage has just sold at auction for $51,750. The price makes it one of the most expensive bottles ever sold in Australia.

The 1951 was the first vintage ever made of what is now widely considered Australia's greatest wine. Only about 160 cases were produced, and the number of bottles still in existence is thought to be fewer than 20.

The wine sold on Wednesday has been tasted by Penfolds' current chief winemaker Peter Gago in 2012 who confirmed it was in excellent condition.

The wine was sold to an unnamed private collector who is based in Melbourne.
