Cadet uncorks wine news

23 August, 2018

Lieke van der Hulst - an enthusiastic communicator who knows her wine from a very scientific level - has been awarded the 2018 Wine Communicators of Australia Wine Media Cadetship.

Lieke holds a PhD in wine science and has a passion for making wine as part of her role as the current science outreach coordinator at the University of Adelaide's Waite Campus.

Here she introduces high school students to the concept of a career in science and exposes them to the viticultural, oenology and agricultural research in South Australia.

The tailored cadet program will see Lieke gain exclusive experiences and insights into the state’s wine industry through participation in events such as the Royal Adelaide Wine Show, Australian Wine Fair in China and the Great Wine Capitals AGM program.

"I feel particularly lucky to cover the Great Wine Capitals AGM during my cadetship as I will be able to hear what representatives of other amazing wine countries love about the South Australian wine culture," she said.

"I remember my own initial, slightly uncertain, steps in Adelaide hospitality and the wine industry as a beautiful, joyful time. A whole new world (of wine) opened for me, and I am looking forward to sharing this experience with international visitors to hear what their experience is.

"I am looking forward to educating myself further in terms of wine sensory knowledge as well as to immerse myself in the many interesting aspects of the Australian wine industry."
